The Senior generation is not quite ready to quit, and the Baby Boomers have not reached the full age of retirement. The age distribution of employees is changing the makeup of the labor force. The U.S. labor force is aging as fewer young people are entering the workplace. A generation is a group of individuals who are similar in age and have experienced the same historical and cultural events within the same period. Members of the same generation are born, start school, enter the workforce, have children and retire around the same time and age. Other shared events include wars, political and civil unrest, social changes and advances in technology. Understanding generational differences is important. â€Å"Shared experiences (year) at key developmental points (age) lead to the unique characteristics (e.g., values, attitudes, personality, etc.) that define and differentiate one generation from another† (Herman Rasch, 2009). These unique characteristics in turn affect social forces, as in norms, customs and culture.
